Chewing gum helps people concentrate on jobs
requiring constant monitoring for a long time. Volunteers listened to numbers read
out for some time and noted when there was a sequence of odd-even-odd. It was found
that people chewing gum during the job reacted quickly and got more precise
results than others. Members who didn't chew gum did somewhat better at the beginning
but were outdone in the end. It is understood that at least eight areas of the
brain are involved in the act of chewing.
